The Japanese term is インターバル速歩, romanized as intābaru sokuhō. “Sokuhō” refers to brisk walking; the app name Sokuho adopts this shorter term.

What did the original study show?
In 2007, Nemoto and colleagues studied a five-month program involving 246 adults. The interval group improved leg strength and endurance more than the control group, which walked at a steady, moderate pace; systolic resting blood pressure also decreased more significantly in the interval group. The guideline was to perform at least 5 cycles of 3 minutes each of light and brisk walking on at least 4 days per week. Not all participants met this guideline. What does Sokuho do with this?

Why don’t the heart rate zones correspond exactly to the study?
The study based the exercise intensity on aerobic capacity. Sokuho, on the other hand, provides a general guideline based on maximum heart rate. These are different reference values. The American Heart Association explains the general heart rate zones used.
Calculating maximum heart rate based on age is also an estimate, not an individual measurement. A known personal value can be used instead.
